Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will be co-scheduled with the third module in the Professional Practice and Practice Education (PPP) stream for the pre-qualification programmes in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy. This module will offer students the opportunity to explore management perspectives and to develop innovative solutions to enhance the delivery of health and social care. The total hours scheduled will be 80 over 6 weeks. Preparation for Practice Education (PPP1, 1280) will be a pre-requisite for this module

Syllabus:

Introduction to management concepts, health service management, entrepreneurship, healthcare systems at home and abroad, HSE policies drivers strategies, change and clinical audit,

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Discuss the role of the clinical therapists in health and wellness initiatives including health promotion. Demonstrate an understanding of the distinctions between service provider and consumer perspectives of delivery and requirements of health care. Understand the application and appreciate the contribution of continuous quality improvement in the health and social care systems. Develop innovative healthcare ideas for improved outcomes or health system efficiencies. Identify an entrepreneurial opportunity and establish if it has a distinct and sustainable competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Respond to professional, ethical, personal and environmental factors that may influence innovative healthcare solutions. Reflect on continuing professional development and learning needs in the context of an evolving healthcare system. Communicate effectively with a range of personnel involved in health and social care.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module consists of a series of signpost lectures, followed by self directed small group work. The lectures focus on the Introduction to critical perspectives in health/welfare policy and social perspectives to health and wellness concerns (in particular disease prevention and health promotion) in Ireland, Europe and Internationally Students will be provided with information to enable their understanding of relevant legislation; clinical audit & effectiveness; client and service provider perspectives, Integrated case management. Small group work involves the development of a business opportunity and to establish if it has distinct and sustainable completitive development in the market place. The fous is on the art of entrepreneurship/Development of business ideas.
